14 Steps To Naturally Being
Each morning for the rest of your physical life, when your mind and body awake, remind yourself of what you really are and liberate yourself from what you are not. If you want to. It's hard to make it more straightforward than this. Make these steps your own, but please understand each step thoroughly so you get everything. It may not be necessary to do this always, as it will become second nature, but this can be a starting point.
Remember you understand you are the Looker (Awareness), not the story of the mind and sensations of the body and world. Stand back from the word cloud in the mind and the body's senses. They do not define you, no matter what they say or feel. Look at them as simply spontaneous expressions of the conscious reality you are.
Remember, you cannot be the thoughts of your mind because they are just thoughts and cannot know anything, and you cannot be the sensations of the body and the world because they are just sensations and cannot know anything; what you are knows everything.
Remember, if you confuse what you are with being the thoughts of the mind, the sensations of the body and the world, otherwise you will equate your happiness with thinking and feeling and what is going on in the world, and you will fall into the painful trap of trying to control all these things even though you cannot control any of them.
Remember that, unlike thoughts and sensations, which are all limited experiences, you, the Looker, have no such limitation you can find.
Remember that, unlike thoughts and sensations generated by the mind and body, you, the Looker, have no evidence you are a personal looker, and you can choose to see yourself as a Universal Looker looking at yourself, not someone trying to be happy. This is a crucial step. Choose to be the infinite and eternal Looker. You do not know you are not. Only your mind has ever told you that you are a separate person. Understanding this is essential to being truly free. To remain steadfast in recognising that the experience of the Looker is universal and not personal, you must examine the following questions to prove to your mind that it does not have an answer. The question is, "Do I have any evidence that the Looker (Aware Reality) I know myself to be is limited in any way or is dependent on separate mind and body? Do not pass over this investigation – this is the most radical investigation you can ever do in your whole life about the nature of what you are. This investigation will prove to you rationally that you have no evidence that you are limited in time and space and, therefore, your mind cannot know what you are. This will mean you have liberated yourself from being defined by your mind. This means you can experience yourself as the Looker as, the Universal Looker that contains all existence and not just a tiny part of existence. Only by resting on this view of yourself can you liberate yourself from all existential fear.
Remember, if you feel any psychological fear – even a tiny amount – it means in some way you still believe to be a separate person and are not open to being the Universal Looker, and you must revisit this investigation. Do not act on what the psychological anxiety is telling you to do. Treat it as a reminder to remind yourself that you have no evidence of being a separate person. This is the proper function of the psychological anxiety. If you do experience psychological suffering, which is very common, especially at first, then do not criticise yourself for this. It is natural. Do not fall into the trap of making things doubly worse by blaming yourself. You are still the Universal Looker choosing this now, and you can return to your natural state. Do not hold on to any belief that you have to be perfect or superhuman in some way or that some special people never suffer. All such beliefs are false. Psychological suffering is a natural mechanism of life. If you continue suffering a lot, it is beneficial to be kind to yourself and reach out for help. Sometimes, patterns run deep, and another perspective can help.
Remember, the key to being the Universal Looker is simply understanding that is what you are and allowing this reality to emerge as it will naturally. If you do this first, then if you need to, it's okay to calm the mind, body, and world by breathing, exercising, letting go of thoughts, and turning off the news. But don't make the mistake of thinking that calming the body and mind will make you happy and make that into the practice of happiness. This will not address the central point of your identification, which is essential if you want to be liberated from the story in your mind.
Remember, recognising you are the Universal Looker is itself to be at one with your true nature and this oneness is experienced as a comprehensive range of life-affirming qualities. From here, you can shine these life-affirming qualities on your experience.
Remember, if you decide to calm the mind and body, it can be helpful to understand to focus on calming the body first. Focus on relaxing that first, and the mind will generally calm down. The mind and body are one process; generally, if the body is calm, the mind will be calm. Also, if the mind is not calm, focusing on the body helps calm it. If your mind and body are in persistent discomfort, it means either that there is something physically wrong that you must attend to immediately or there is a psychological injury, such as trauma, that is activating. It would help if you listened to that. Or it could be due to a neurological condition, your mind and body take extra time to get calm and find certain situations particularly difficult (learn about them and be kind to them), or that something is going on in your environment, including a relationship, that is the cause of this pressure. You should remove yourself from this as it is not serving you, or there is a specific skill your mind and body require that is lacking and causing this anxiety. Be clear about these things – understanding your mind and body even to this level is essential. Or it could be that your mind and body have become very deeply programmed to be seeking and avoidant or even addicted, and some deprogramming is required.
When you are consciously being the Universal Looker, you are fully present with the thoughts of the mind, the sensations of the body, and the world in a fully accepting, non-judgemental way.
When you are consciously being the Universal Looker, any thoughts that your mind is telling you and you were paying attention to that there was something wrong with you because all these thoughts are about a story of you being a separate person in the world or some kind of belief that limits what you are according to mental ideas, and struggling with life and how inadequate you are and how many things you need to be frightened of, and none of this is true when you remember you are the Looker and not the mind and body. You do not need to pay attention to those thoughts; they are all false. Your mind cannot know what you are, only that you are. Do not let your mind tell you anything about yourself. Let all such thoughts dissolve. They will. Your mind is your servant – not your master. Your mind is helpful to organise living – not organise what you are. Do not let it do that ever. Remain in pure openness of being at all times.
When you are consciously being the Universal Looker, any good or bad sensations that you were feeling in your body and you were paying attention to that were telling you there was something wrong with you release in their own time because all these tense feelings are about a story of you being a separate person in the world and struggling with life and how inadequate you are and how many things you need to be frightened of, and none of this is true when you remember you are the Looker and not the mind and body. You do not need to pay attention to those feelings that tell you this. They are all false. Let them dissolve. They will. If they persist, then accept them and listen in case they tell you something is uncomfortable about the body that needs to be attended to. Remember, the body has an intelligence of its own; you created it for just this purpose. Your body must be comfortable.
When you are consciously being the Universal Looker, all sensations you perceive around you in the world from whatever form are made of you and part of you and not separate from you, and you will feel this. In other words, at this moment, the whole Universe around you is just a spontaneous explosion of creation, and no one or nothing is in control. Allow yourself to trust this natural creative process that is emerging from you. Allow yourself to trust that thoughts will naturally occur that will guide you to take action. You do not need to worry. These thoughts will be full of light and not a result of fear. Get used to spotting those thoughts. Typically, they will be rational next-step thoughts and visions that seem full of light and happiness - even if they are very simple visions or thoughts, they will feel true. Then, if you wish, you can take action based on them. If you don't, then that's also fine. Some thoughts will be practical in nature, and some more creative (left and right brain), but in all cases, they will make sense and be clear and free of psychological suffering.
When you consciously are the Universal Looker, all other minds and bodies will be experienced as different expressions of the same Aware Reality you are. You will see them and hear them as this. Not as separate people. If they say something that upsets you, this is you talking to yourself. You will only be upset if you take it personally because you have forgotten you are the Universal Looker and believe yourself to be a person. This does not mean you must agree with or listen to any other body or mind. Though you can be free to love all minds and bodies as expressions of the same Aware Reality, because of unique wiring, some will be closer than others. This is natural. Always remember everything is about Love.
