Rest as the Perfection Beyond Mind You Are
I love this often-stated line by a teacher of non-duality named Bob Adamson: “What is wrong with this moment apart from the thought of it?” Though our minds, driven by fear and lack, may seek some solution to the present moment, as if our mind could change the flow of existence itself through its emotionally driven will, in reality, beneath this striving for a better moment somewhere else is the permanent peace of the presence of our aware being.
What makes this aware presence so safe, once we open our mind and consciously recognise and experience its reality, is that we don’t know this is a personal separate conscious presence dependent on our physical brain. Free of imposing this limiting belief upon it, we can, with conviction, enjoy its qualities;. However, thoughts and sensations come and go, it is always there without beginning or end, therefore apparently transcending even physical death itself. It is constantly the same and never affected by anything; hence always the safe refuge of our heart, never touched by the relative ups and downs of our daily life.
It is omnipresent and ubiquitous throughout our experience, the substance of all that appears and disappears, and is never unavailable even amidst strong emotion. It is full of life-affirming qualities. As non-dual teacher Francis Lucille states: “Beauty, intelligence, humour, and happiness cannot be found in objects, gross or subtle. They are ‘divine’ qualities that belong exclusively to the Self. ‘Beautiful’, ‘intelligent’, ‘funny’, and ‘happy’ are adjectives that apply to objects that point towards these divine qualities by design. There are objects which don’t point by design towards the divine realm. These objects can be rightfully called ‘not beautiful’, ‘not intelligent’, etc.”
As we rest as the perfection of our impersonal aware being through the path of understanding that leads to the experience of our true nature, we naturally shine these qualities like the sun, providing a healing context for all psychological wounding and relational tension. Though there are various paths to arrive at this experience—mantra meditation, direct understanding, silent meditation, tantric practices, instantaneous revelation, prayer—there is only one destination, and this is the most essential point. Let’s not quibble about how we get there. Once we are home, in our true inner refuge of this peaceful perfection, then all actions are divested of fear and lack and shine the life-affirming qualities of our nature like the sun shines.
Love,
